The Open National Flute Competition is the biggest and best-known competition for amateur flautists and conservatory students in Western Europe and was held for the 28th time in 2011, attracting 180 competitors. Participants in the Open National Flute Competition were students from The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Latvia, Poland, China and Taiwan.

In 2012 the biennial soloists competition for amateur flautists and the Open National Soloists Competition for students (BA and MA) will be held. Registration commences on 1 September 2011 and closes on 30 November 2011. From 1 december 2011 applications will only be allowed if there is place left in the appropriate category.

Many laureates have gone on to become renowned professional musicians, but the fact that there are various categories also lowers the barrier to participation.

The organiser of the soloists and ensemble competitions (amateur flautists) and the student competition is the Stichting Nationaal Fluitconcours. Both the preliminary rounds and the final are open to the public.
